Alumni Spotlight: Howard B. Reid II, MBA ‘08

I grew up in Rochester, NY and was excited to return home to pursue an MBA at a great program.  My background and undergraduate degree is in Biology, and my first exposure to a business curriculum was at the Simon School.  It was important for me to pursue an MBA in a program that had small classes where I would get the individual attention I needed from world-class faculty.  Additionally I was also attracted to Simon’s quantitative pedigree and international reputation.  I was looking to acquire the quantitative tools and frameworks I could apply to a marketing career in the pharmaceutical industry.

Personally (and most importantly), I met my wife at Simon who completed the MD/MBA program.  I also developed a network of life-long friends and colleagues who have been an incredible support network.  Professionally, Simon equipped me with a set of tools that have differentiated my skill set from among other top-tier MBA candidates.  The quantitative approach to solving business problems and the application of frameworks has helped me navigate a variety of roles in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry.  Over the past 6 years I’ve had 5 different positions in strategy, marketing, sales, and investments in both the US and Asia.  Without an MBA from Simon my career development and trajectory would not be possible.

I currently manage a team of 9 Account Managers and Virology Sales Specialists, promoting 4 products HIV therapeutics generating approximately $100 MM in revenue for Janssen Therapeutics.  We are responsible for building relationships and providing the information that health care providers need in order to make informed treatment decisions for their patients with HIV.  We also work to ensure patients have access to our product portfoliom and that community based organizations have the resources needed to educate the HIV community.

My words of advice for prospective students considering Simon Business School:
Selecting an MBA program is a critical decision in both your career and life.  Select a program that will equip you with the skills needed to compete in a global business environment that uses data to make big decisions.  Consider a program where you will have the time and opportunity to “dig deep” and learn from top-tier faculty in a small class setting.  Select Simon because everything you thought you knew will be challenged, and at the end of the journey you will be a better person as a result.
