Alumni Spotlight: H. Samuel Ko, MBA ’08, MD ‘08

In my job I see any and all patients who walk in through the ER doors, regardless of insurance by helping to reduce pain, relieve suffering, and allay fears and anxiety. I listen, examine, and diagnosis. I do my best to, “Cure sometimes, treat often, & comfort always.” -Hippocrates

I was given an amazing chance to learn about business while studying medicine at the University of Rochester through the Joint MD/MBA Program.  In every step of the application and interview process, I was very impressed by their professionalism and courtesy.  Simon School’s concentration in Healthcare Management was my focus initially. But another opportunity arose for me to study at Helsinki School of Economics in Finland via Simon’s International Exchange Program. As a result, I concentrated in International Management and see myself as a world citizen. I continue to help on medical missions internationally.

The healthcare system today is sick. Because of Simon’s business tools, I feel that I can make a meaningful contribution in helping to heal healthcare organizations.

In addition, I am also grateful to the Career Management Center, Administrative Staff, Dean Zupan, Profs. Brickley, Dobson, Hansen, Lederer, Oliveiri, Raith, Schmidt, Seidmann, Smith, Wedig, and Professor Wu. Each person has impacted my life greatly.  I can also say my skills in Microsoft Excel have skyrocketed!

My words of advice for prospective students considering Simon Business School:
Definitely do it. You will learn so much about business and about yourself. You will be surrounded with a talented, diverse group of peers. You will gain a huge network of people. You will have fun. You will become a leader.
