What’s IN Rochester, anyway? The Neighborhoods Edition Part 2.

By: Ariane

Last month we took a look at the South Wedge neighborhood.  This month we’re going to explore Rochester’s most well-known area – Park Avenue.

The Park Avenue area is made up of beautiful victorian and tudor mansions, built when Kodak and Xerox were true corporate giants in the early to mid-1900’s.  Now, most of these sprawling homes have been split into apartments of various styles, sizes, and price ranges. Residents trend toward the college aged and young professionals. Most homes are rentals and the area is well-known for it’s pretty tree-lined streets and proximity to bars, restaurants, and shops, as well as the annual Park Avenue Festival.

Living in the area has the definite perk of being in walking distance of many establishments.  Restaurants in the area vary greatly: the Park Avenue Pubserves creative, high-end cuisine.  Jines is a long-established eatery that serves a little bit of everything, but is best known for it’s great breakfast (Charlie’s Frog Pond, next door, is much the same). Nathan’s Soups is a take-out joint in nature and price, but the quality of food is truly fantastic. Chester Cab Pizzaserves a good slice, while Sinbad’s Mediterranean CuisineEsan Thai, andPirahna (Peruvian-Japanese fusion) add a little diversity.  And this is only on two blocks!

Parkleigh is another Park Avenue mainstay – their wares range from quirky (Ugly Dolls, anyone?) to high end (they carry locally made luxury home brand,Mackenzie Childs). Dado and A Step Apart sell great clothes, the Jembetat Gallery offers eclectic jewelry, and Utter Clutter lets you dig through great second-hand finds.  A number of salons, coffee shops, chocolatiers, and innumerable other eatieries and shops all exist in a span less than a mile long.

This area is VERY popular with our students, especially those in graduate school.  It’s affordable with plenty to do, as well as being along the UR bus line!  For more information, check out a UR created site here.

I’ll be back with one last neighborhood next month!  Hope everyone’s having a great 2010 so far.
