Scholarship Weekend is More than Earning Increased Scholarship Support!

By: Jonathan Markowicz

Scholarship weekend at Simon goes by very quickly. A lot is packed into a short amount of time. However, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. The opportunity to earn a full scholarship meant the difference between launching my own company while at Simon and not. Therefore, I came to scholarship weekend with a strategy, which was to make an impression.

For me this meant more than just schmoozing with classmates and alumni. My professional background was directing a community rowing program and serving in the United States Air Force- far from Wall Street. I never did a case study before, let alone participate in a competition. When I was handed our case on Ikea, I read it through and thought, “Now what do I do?” Furthermore, I was nervous that people would converse using business jargon and I would have no idea what they were talking about. I couldn’t fake what I didn’t know. Therefore, I needed to highlight my strengths: my communication skills, my creativity, and my energy.

That weekend, we turned my hotel room into base ops where we worked diligently on our Ikea presentation. I worry that I don’t take things seriously sometimes because we framed our presentation as a travel itinerary, in fact my role in the presentation was the travel agent/emcee, and handed out little soaps and shampoos to the judges as a gimmick. In hindsight, it worked; however, on the day we presented, we had no idea how it would go over and just committed to doing something that no other group would. Not only was this the impression I wanted to leave with Simon, it was my way of giving Simon an idea of what I could bring to the class environment.

I’m reading this over and wondering if it comes across as kind of contrived. Let me conclude, then, by sharing a recent experience. I was down in Brooklyn after Hurricane Sandy helping with the relief efforts. My military unit was stationed at the distribution site at Floyd Bennett Field loading and unloading truckloads of food and supplies. Two men from the Coast Guard pull up to load their vehicle with some water. And, wouldn’t you believe, one of the reservists was a teammate of mine from scholarship weekend. Although he didn’t end up going to Simon, for he resolved to pursue other career opportunities, we quickly reminisced over our over-the-top Ikea presentation, late-night work in the hotel, and the evening reception (which is a story for another time). So, there you have it, an example of making an impression at Simon’s Scholarship Weekend and seeing how far the Simon network can reach when you least expect it. It’s real.

Congratulations to everyone invited and I look forward to meeting you this weekend.

Women’s Weekend- Don’t Miss this Opportunity!

By: Stephani Springer

As I think back on my admissions journey to the Simon School, there is one event that always seems to stick out in my mind; Women’s Weekend.  This weekend provides a great opportunity for prospective female students to come to the University of Rochester campus to learn about Simon and mingle with current students, alumni, faculty, and admissions staff. I am looking forward to joining the event this year to share my experience, as a current student for the first time!

When I attended Women’s Weekend as a prospect in 2011, I had the opportunity to network with alumni from my intended program who wound up becoming great contacts as I continue my time here at Simon. Female alumni fly in from all over the country to share their stories with future Simonites.  Hearing their stories can shed some light on what you can do with a degree from Simon and I can say from experience, you will not be disappointed. It also turned out that the alumni and admissions staff present at the networking dinner conducted admissions interviews the following day as well. Having the opportunity to chat in a casual setting ahead of time made the actual interviews the next day much more relaxed. This was one of the greatest advantages of attending the event.

Women’s Weekend also gives prospective students the opportunity to hear from current students what the Simon experience is really all about.  What better way to get the inside scoop than to talk to those currently going through it? Current students volunteer to help with these events, so take advantage of our presence and ask tons of questions; we are willing to help. Please click the link below for details and registration for this year’s event. I hope that all prospective female students will come join us for Women’s Weekend 2012 to hear the inspiring stories of these female powerhouses, learn about the program from current students, and maybe even have your admissions interview.

The Simon MBA/MS Admissions Office visits a city near you

August, September and October are key months when the Simon MBA and MS Admissions staff are out on the road visiting key U.S. and international markets to meet prospective students.  Simon participates in the QS World MBA Tour, The MBA Tour, Consortium for Graduate Study in Management MAPS events, Forté Forums and Inside the MBA.  As you can imagine, this keeps our suitcases packed for weeks at a time, with many hours spent living in hotels and airports.  But, it’s a worthwhile investment when we meet great candidates who are excited about the MBA and MS programs that we offer.  What can you expect from attending one of these events?

It’s a great opportunity to get “face-time” with an Admissions officer.  Introduce yourself, share a bit about your background and interests and ultimately learn more about the program and career paths available at Simon.  We usually have current students or alumni attending these events with us, so you can get both the Admissions perspective on applying and the student/alumni perspective on the Simon Experience.  For details on where we will be in the coming weeks, see our Off-campus events calendar. If we are not visiting a city near you, don’t worry, we have regularly scheduled webinars, and also do 1:1 informational appointments by request over the phone or Skype.  We hope to meet you soon!
