“A Tradition Unlike Any Other…” Well, the Masters has laid claim to this phrase, but Simon has a golf tradition of its own, and on May 18th more than 120 Simon students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends from near and far converged on Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, NY for the 24th annual Simon School Golf Classic!
For me it was a bittersweet opportunity – having spent 10 years outside the ropes planning major golf championships for the PGA of America, it was nice to finally be inside the ropes and enjoy the beautiful weather, camaraderie, spend quality time away from the office with members of the Simon community, and enjoy the wonderful game of golf.

One might not expect that members of the Simon community would be highly-skilled in golf, after all they are supposed to lead and excel in business, but the winning team of Marais Lombard (’12 MBA), Professor Ron Schmidt, Peter Hebert (’12 MBA), and Varun Shah (’12 MBA) posted an impressive score of 54, or 18 under par.  I won’t get into the technicalities of how golf is scored, but 18 under par is equivalent to scoring one less than par on every hole (ie. a score of 2 on par 3, a score of 3 on a par 4, or a score of 4 on a par 5).  To put this into perspective for the non-golf enthusiasts, the lowest score ever recorded in a round by a professional is 59.  All teams in the Simon Golf Classic had a slight handicap though, we played the round using a ‘Scramble’ format (each player hits his/her own shot, then you pick the best shot out of the group and proceed with this process through completion of the hole), but needless to say, there were a number of impressive golfers and team scores this year.

An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the support of many, and we owe a very special thanks to Nate Kadar for coordinating another successful tournament, the Vangellow Family for their continued support of the Simon School and Alumni Golf Classic, Dr. Vinay Aggarwal ’09 for his countless efforts and enthusiasm for the tournament, and all of the tournament volunteers (Kris Seewagen, Melissa Kunzer, Sue Bauer, Eleni Kiriakidis, Laura Gavigan, Daina Bullwinkle, Keir Meisner).  We are also grateful for the support of event sponsors including the Vangellow Family, RW Dake, Rochester Steel Works, Rhino Trunk, AcquisitionsNow LLC, Dr. Vinay Aggarwal, and Ravenwood Golf Club for welcoming us to their beautiful facility.

There will certainly be a lot of anticipation for next year’s Golf Classic, which will take place May 17th at Ravenwood Golf Club, so be sure to mark your calendars and plan to attend!  If you’re looking to quell your golf itch for the remainder of the year, be sure to get out and play one of the many wonderful golf courses in Rochester, or check-out the Wegmans LPGA Championship taking place June 7-10, 2012 at Locust Hill Country Club.
