The Final Application Deadline Has Passed. What Are My Options?

The following blog post was written by Rebekah Lewin, assistant dean of admissions & financial aid and a 2002 graduate of Simon’s MBA program

May 15 was the final application deadline for Simon’s full-time MBA and MS programs, so if you’re interested in Simon, you’ve likely set your sights on a 2017 start.

However, if recent developments or circumstances have prompted you to explore a Fall 2016 start, we recommend reaching out to the Admissions Office to find out whether there are any available openings for the program you’re interested in. Explain a little about yourself: What type of work experience you have, whether you’re a domestic or international student, and what your career goals are. A member of the Admissions Committee will review your background and provide feedback on whether an expedited 2016 application is possible.

After the final admissions deadline, speaking to an admissions counselor can help you decide when you should submit an application.

After the final admissions deadline, speaking to an admissions counselor can help you decide when you should submit an application.

Consider the following pieces of advice:

  • Watch our Round 5 Application Tips webinar for advice on how to position yourself as a competitive candidate late in the admissions cycle.
  • Use your optional essay to explain why you’re applying after the final deadline. We understand that unexpected things happen in life, but having some context for your decision-making would be helpful rather than allowing us to make our own assumptions.
  • Do your research. You’ve (hopefully) already done research about Simon and your program of interest, but make sure you get a sense of what’s required for financial aid and housing since you’ll be trying to get all of your details finalized later than most.

The most important piece of advice is to apply when you believe you’re ready. Don’t rush through an application just to submit it under the wire for a 2016 start. It’s much better to wait until you’ve been able to carefully think through the answers to your essays, choose your strongest recommenders to write your letters, and polish (and proofread!) your résumé.

We hope this assists with your decision making, and regardless of your timing for B-school, we look forward to reviewing your application!
