Staying Active in the Winter Months

By: Crissi

As the snow begins to fall in Rochester, everyone retreats indoors for the season.  With a tunnel system connecting the campus’ buildings, there is rarely a need to go outside.  Many Simon students, staff and faculty find reprieve from the winter weather in the vast Goergen Athletic Center. This place has a variety of fitness opportunities all available indoors: a 200 meter indoor track; an indoor field for baseball, soccer, football, or anything else; racket ball courts; tennis courts; basketball courts that are often converted for volleyball or badminton; an indoor pool; a 11,000-square-foot Fitness/Weight Facility; and free fitness classes such as yoga and pilates in the dance studio.

Many students and staff can be seen working out during the lunch hour or between classes. As a patron myself, I am always running into a familiar face at the Athletic Center. Simon students are an active bunch with three student run sports clubs that meet and practice at the gym: Simon Golf Club, golfclub@simon.rochester.edu; Soccer Club, Soccer@simon.rochester.edu; and Simon Tennis Club SimonTennisClub@simon.rochester.edu.  Each club holds lessons, practices, trips and tournaments, some with other B-Schools such as the Yale MBA Tournament and the Tuck MBA Cup for Soccer and others within Simon such as the annual Students versus Faculty Tennis Tournament.  In 2008, the students won the Tennis Tournament.
