Simon’s MS in Accountancy Program Receives STEM Designation

We have exciting news to share about a recent distinction for our MS in Accountancy program: we are now designated as a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program under the United States Department of Homeland Security, effective the 2018–2019 academic year!

MSA photoOur MS in Accountancy is one of the few graduate accountancy programs in the US to achieve this designation, while also offering the academic preparation required to sit for the New York State CPA exam. In response to feedback from current students, recent graduates, and corporate partners, we have built on our longstanding strength in analytics to enhance our program as we strive to live by the University of Rochester’s motto, Meliora, which means “Ever Better.” The MS Accountancy STEM designation is an external stamp of approval that recognizes the many distinctive qualities already present in the Simon MSA curriculum, with modest changes to our existing coursework. STEM will provide many benefits to you as an incoming MS in Accountancy student, including:

  • Creating expanded offerings in the program’s core curriculum, including new courses in statistics using R and programming for analytics
  • Allowing eligible graduates on an F1 international student visa to remain in the country for an additional 24 months of optional practical training (OPT)—for a total of 36 months without the requirement of a work visa
  • Signaling program quality and rigor to employers
