MBA Summer Internship Reflections

Several of our second-year MBA students share their internship experiences from this summer.

katie.freiert“I spent my summer interning with the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the Player Development Department. This department is unique as their goal is further the professional and personal development of current and former players on and off the court. During my time, I was tasked with preparing presentations for personal branding and effects on the business of basketball, which were used for programming given at the 2016 NBA Draft as well as the Rookie Transition Program. In addition, the interns in my department planned and executed a NBA Cares event for a Rookie Photo Shoot experience. As part of our overall internship deliverable, we had a Graduate Think Tank project that tackled a real business issue and present our findings to the managing League department. The Player Development team was the best part of the position as they integrated me into all project processes, meetings, and event execution. The opportunity to meet and work with League staff, executives, and players made the experience one that I will never forget. Through this process, I saw how my Simon education could turn my passion for sports into a successful career after graduation.” -Katie Freiert, 2017 MBA candidate

“I spent the summer as a Summer Financial Management Associate at Citigroup with the corporate strategy team. I directly reported to the Director of img_7666Corporate Strategy. I worked on several projects simultaneously, including tasks related to the July 2016 board meeting and the organization’s long-term strategy. I analyzed firm-wide and segment returns (RoTCE) and how capital is allocated to each business, both internally and compared to competition. RoTCE is correlated to firm valuation and thus very important for senior management’s decision making. I enjoyed the fast-paced environment, the highly skilled team, and with previous experience as a consultant, learning about a new field and industry. The summer program provided excellent opportunities to learn and explore what it is like to work there full time. Access to senior management, speaker series, trainings and much more made it a truly rewarding and exciting experience that I strongly recommend to people seeking a corporate finance career in the financial services industry.” – Carl Johan Mattias Svensson, 2017 MBA candidate

sarah_spoto“This summer  I interned with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as part of their Leadership Development Program. I had amazing, unique opportunities to experience the automotive industry through car shows, plant tours, ride and drives, and of course, my daily business processes auditing work. I even had the opportunity to meet FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne, and in true Simon Women in Business style I asked him: “How can we create more opportunities for women in the automotive industry?” I’m proud to be a woman in auto pursuing my career in an ever-evolving industry.”      – Sarah Spoto, 2017 MBA candidate
