Class of 2019 Spotlight: Mrigendra Kumar Mrityunjaya and Kara Frost

For the final installment of our Class of 2019 Spotlight Series, meet recent MBA graduates Mrigendra Kumar Mrityunjaya and Kara Frost:

Mrigendra Kumar Mrityunjaya ’19 (MBA)

Mrig.Mrityunjaya '19 (MBA)

Where are you headed after graduation?
I am joining McKinsey & Company as a solution specialist in August.

What was your favorite class and why?
Although I liked many classes, I would say Market Research with Prof. Mitchell Lovett was one of my favorites. The practical, case-based coursework, along with Prof. Lovett’s flawless delivery, helped me understand research methodologies that drive development of any successful product or a business plan.

If you could use three words to describe your MBA experience, what would they be?
Transformative, fulfilling, and analytical.

What have you learned that will help you most in your new role?
Among other things, what will help me the most in my new role are:

  • Succinct and effective business communication skills
  • Analytical methods for problem solving

What is your favorite Simon memory?
Some of my fondest Simon memories were all the happy hours, BBQs, and hangouts with my friends in my class. But my favorite Simon memory was our first hangout at Victoire (now Unter Biergarten) during Orientation week.

What advice do you have for prospective Simon students?
My advice for prospective Simon students is:

  • Reach out to the admissions staff or current students to learn more about the journey of students with your background and goals.
  • Keep an open mind. Consider different industries, functions, and roles during your MBA, and you may find a role in an industry that could be a better fit and more fulfilling than your initial career goal.
  • Attend Scholarship Weekend/Admit Weekend. If invited, Scholarship Weekend is a great opportunity to potentially increase your scholarship amount, and both Scholarhsip weekends offer opportunities to network with alums and your future classmates.

Where are you headed after graduation?
I’ll be joining Discover Financial Services’ MBA Strategic Leadership Program, which is a two-year rotational program.

What was your favorite class and why?
Market Research with Mitch Lovett. Each week, Professor Lovett covered a topic in market and consumer research, illuminating that topic through an in-depth case assignment. It gave me the skills for understanding what consumers will respond to in the market. Additionally, my course case team (Magdiel Guardado, Mrigendra Mrityunjaya, and Nikhil Pinto) was the best that I had throughout my Simon experience, reaffirming that a collection of different, but complementary, skills and open collaboration achieve the best results.

If you could use three words to describe your MBA experience, what would they be?
Challenging, humbling, and broadening.

What have you learned that will help you most in your new role?
I’ve learned how to take an ambiguous problem and find a series of solutions through methodical, investigative research.

What is your favorite Simon memory?
Getting my full-time offer, of course!

What advice do you have for prospective Simon students?
Begin your job search as soon as possible—yesterday would be ideal. If you are still uncertain about where you’d like to find yourself for your internship or after graduation, that’s OK. Just start somewhere! Focus on incremental progress instead of an offer. I promise your efforts will eventually be rewarded.
