Broaden Your Horizons – Africa!

Post by Rebekah:

On February 27th, Simon students hosted fellow classmates, faculty, and staff to a "Broaden Your Horizons – Africa" (BYH) event.  BYH allows students to share information on the history, culture, and traditions of their home country, while serving foods from their native countries.  In this  BYH, current students from Tunisia, South Africa, Ghana, and Egypt shared a view of their world, that expanded the knowledge base for all who attended.

I particularly enjoyed learning about: Ghana – "the Gold Coast", which has an economy that is based upon natural resources such as cocoa and gold; Egypt – the Great Sphinx, the Pyramids, and the fantastic photos of the country; South Africa – their excitment about holding the World Cup in 2010, and their diversification from mining and natural resources into financial serivces and the manufacturing sector; Tunisia – it’s historic links to the Roman and Byzantine Empires, and more recent to both Africa and Europe.

BYH events take place several times each year and previously have covered India, China, Japan, Brazil, Eastern Europe, and a variety of other world-wide locations.  It’s an excellent way to celebrate the diversity of the Simon community.
